Abstract: The Berkeley collection consists of letters and British naval orders spanning the years 1808 to 1813. All of the letters in this collection concern the naval operations under Sir George Cranfield Berkeley 's command. Sir James Hawkins Whitshed Minute book and Sketchbook

Overview This collection consists of a sketchbook and a minute book, both authored by Sir James Hawkins Whitshed, an officer in the British Navy. The sketchbook contains numerous depictions of naval ships and a self-caricature of Whitshed himself. The minute book contains a careful list of letters received and sent by Whitshed, plus a summary of the day’s events during the years 1821-1822.

Sir John William Phillips Marshall papers

Abstract: Bound volume of transcribed correspondence to and from British Rear Admiral Sir John William Phillips Marshall, CB (1785-1850), during the period of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) and concurrent War of 1812, including correspondence concerning a court martial related to the capture and destruction of the ship H.M.S. Java by the USS Constitution in 1813.

Sir William Sidney Smith papers

Abstract: The papers of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith contain letters concerning Smith's brother, John Spencer Smith, who was British ambassador to the Porte at Constantinople in the early 1790s. Correspondents include Robert Liston, British Minister to the United States. Also included is a genealogy of the Smith family, a battle order issued by Smith aboard HMS Tigre during the siege at Acre in 1799, and an invitation to the funeral of the Duke of Wellington.

Texas Governors Letters collection

Abstract: This collection contains three letters: two from Governor James Allred of Texas to Emil Hurja of the Democratic National Committee in Washington D.C. (1935-36), and one from Gov. Lawrence Sullivan Ross of Texas to General M. Cist of Cincinnati, Ohio (1889). Subjects include thanks for gifts sent and requests for reading materials, and do not relate specifically to Texas politics.

Thomas Lindsey Blayney papers

Abstract Papers of Thomas Lindsey Blayney, a founding member of the faculty of Rice Institute (now University) and Professor of German there from 1912- 1924; materials include records of his military service during World War I (1917-1919), and later appointments as president of Texas State Women’s College (1924-26) and dean of Carleton College (1926-46); also included are family memoirs, correspondence, photographs, news clippings, and memorabilia.

U.S. Army and Navy letters

Scope and Contents While the letters are on a number of different topics, many deal with the Sterling Debenture Corporation and stock offerings in the American Telegraphone Corporation. The corporation was founded in 1903 to manufacture the Telegraphone, a magnetic sound recording device invented by Danish engineer Valdemar Poulson. Although several hundred machines were bought by curious scientists, the product was not a commercial success.
